I'm a huge fan of Bill and Hillary Clinton. I consider him a great President. I think she would have been an even better one. I worked for both of her Presidential campaigns, and I don't regret a second of it. She's smart, she's tough, and she cares about making the country better. I'm a fan.
I've never been more disappointed though than when I heard that Bill and Hillary Clinton intend to attend the inauguration of Donald Trump on January 20th. It's one thing to be gracious, it's another thing to reward bad behavior. Other than giving the crowd someone to boo when they arrive, I don't see what the Clintons add to the event? No one at that event will be thrilled to see them, with the exception of perhaps Donald Trump, whom will get some validation from it.
Donald Trump's campaign was based on how awful the Clintons are. He chose to malign Bill's Presidency and call him a rapist. He chose to call Hillary "crooked Hillary," and falsely claim she had committed crimes and would go to jail. Then days after his "victory" against her, he said he "wouldn't investigate her," which of course is because he had no case, but also to make her seem small next to him. He made his entire campaign about smearing the Clintons character, and it worked.
He didn't stop with just the Clintons though. Trump treated the current President as a foreign usurper, questioning his citizenship and patriotism regularly. Trump slammed the Bush family and attacked their Presidencies. He basically said they were all idiots, and that he alone could fix the mess they created. He showed very little to no respect for the office of the Presidency.
If Donald Trump believes the Clintons are a couple of criminals, then their presence is not needed at his inauguration as the new leader of America. If he doesn't believe they actually are, and just said it because it helped him win, then their presence is not deserved at his inauguration. Yes, I know that it is customary for former Presidents to attend the inauguration of future Presidents, but custom and class are not proper in this case. All of this talk of "when they go low, we go high" may make us feel good as Democrats and as citizens, but at what cost? How many hungry people, sick people, marginalized people, and students have been helped by class? How many votes have been won by "going high?" Either this new President is a man that wants to criminalize his opponents, or he is a shameless S.O.B. who will say gruesome things about his rivals in the pursuit of power, but won't have the decency to at least believe them. Bill and Hillary Clinton should not attend this event. Hell, the Bush family should not attend this event. It is wrong on every level.
Hillary Clinton does not owe legitimacy to Donald Trump. Neither does Bill. Neither does any other former President. If he really thinks they're all useless crooks, let him celebrate on his own. No one owes him any legitimacy.
